Wicked Wednesday Blog Tour & Giveaway: A Highlander's Tempation by Sue-Ellen Welfonder

Hello lovelies!
It's our favorite blogstastic day of the week and we've got another smokin' giveaway for you courtesy of Hatchette/Forever Books ♥

Synopsis: Arabella, daughter of the Black Stag of Kintail and leader of the MacKenzie clan, has heard all the stories of love & passion from her married sister but she herself has never experienced love or passion. Her father has scared away any & all potential suitors and so she remains lonely. She decides that it's time for an adventure and asks her father's permission to visit the Seal Isles...a small island that is party of her dowry. After much pleading and with the help of her mother & uncle, her reluctant father finally allows her to go. During her voyage, her ship is attacked by the elusive and legendary Black Vikings and she is shipwrecked on MacConacher Isle. As the only survivor of the attack, she is rescued by Darroc MacConacher, leader of the clan that inhabits this isle.

Darroc is mesmerized by her. Not only is she the most beautiful woman he's ever seen, but she has actually frequented his dreams as an unnamed raven-haired temptress. It isn't until he finds out who she really is - daughter of his arch nemesis - that he's torn between pride, honor & vengeance for his clan and a love & passion that he's never known before.

Arabella does not blame him for his hatred of her clan - she's heard the stories and knows what they've suffered at the hand of her grandfather. However, she is all too willing to look past that and accept him because she's falling hopelessly in love with this gorgeous, tortured man. The real question is, can he look past her blood-ties and love her for the woman she is and not the clan she belongs to? Then again, how will Arabella's father feel about her falling into the arms and into the bed of a MacConacher?

Isalys's Review: I really enjoyed this story. It has all the elements of a dramatic, Romeo & Juliet inspired tale, minus the tragic ending. In addition to the hero & heroine, there are many secondary characters that really enhanced the story such as Duncan & Linnet MacKenzie (Arabella's parents who are so opposite of each other yet so loving), Devorgilla of Doon (the magical crone that helps encourage Arabella & Darroc's love w/o their knowing), Mad Moraig (the wise old crow of MacConacher Isle that cares for Arabella), and Asa Long Legs (MacConacher Castle's resident ghost).

And if all this isn't enough, there is Darroc's quest to find and destroy the notorious Black Vikings. Not only will destroying them avenge Arabella and those who perished during the attack on her cog, but it will rid the seas of these pesky pirates and hopefully gain a nice prize from the King for him & his friend Olaf Big Nose.

The story is full of fun, interesting characters and delicious descriptions of Scotland's beauty, seas & erratic weather. It's all about finding your love, forgiving the past and hoping for a future together. It is truly a charming tale! I give it ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

8 Romances in 8 Sentences - Part 2

This is the second part to my '8 Romances in 8 Sentences' segment.

TO TASTE TEMPTATION by ELIZABETH HOYT

Synopsis: Lady Emeline Gordon is the model of sophistication in London's elite social circles, always fashionable and flawlessly appropriate. As such, she is the perfect chaperon for Rebecca, the young sister of a successful Boston businessman and former Colonial soldier.

Samuel Hartley may be wealthy, but his manners are as uncivilized as the American wilderness he was raised in. Who wears moccasins to a grand ball? His arrogant disregard for propriety infuriates Emeline, even as his boldness excites her.

But beneath Samuel's rakish manner, he is haunted by tragedy. He has come to London to settle a score, not to fall in love. And as desperately as Emeline longs to feel this shameless man's hands upon her, to taste those same lips he uses to tease her, she must restrain herself. She is not free. But some things are beyond a lady's control...

Lady Emeline is as prim & proper as they come and she knows everything there is to know about fitting into the society ton. Samuel is the American colonial that takes London by storm with his unpolished look and demeanor. Samuel surprises Emeline by asking her to help educate his sister on how to properly fit into London's society circle. However, that's not the real reason he traveled all the way to London and he'll be damned if she truly found out why.

I continue to be a fan of Elizabeth Hoyt's work. The characters were both well developed; they were interesting, competent and strong, but with realistic flaws. The relationship didn't develop immediately but over time and it didn't overshadow the secondary plot of the massacre at Spinner's Falls. I worked my way backwards with the series which is a little weird, but it didn't take away from each individual story...and now I have part 4 to look forward to, "To Desire A Devil" :)

WHEN THE DUKE RETURNS by ELOISA JAMES

Synopsis: Married by proxy as a child, Lady Isidore has spent years fending off lecherous men in every European court while waiting to meet her husband. She's determined to accept him, no matter how unattractive the duke turns out to be. When she finally lures Simeon Jermyn back to London, his dark handsomeness puts Isidore's worst fears to rest—until disaster strikes.

The duke demands an annulment.

Isidore is tired of being a 23-year old virgin who is patiently waiting for her husband to return from his escapades. She decides to lure him back by attending the most scandalous party in all of London - and sure enough it works! However, he is not what she expected and she is certainly not what he expected either. He was tall, tanned and gorgeous with an air of rebelliousness about him and she was everything he didn't want in a woman - sensual, alluring and not the least bit docile.

These characters were unique in that neither one had any experience with intimacy or even kissing. They learned about their own sexuality by learning about each other and those little embarrassing moments made them so much more lovable! They didn't instantly fall in love but rather were given an appropriate amount of time to learn and accept each other. I will definitely be reading the rest of the books in this series.

Note:
I decided to read this book after reading a positive review from fellow blogger, Medieval Bookworm. Visit her page if you want to check out her review.

SEDUCED BY HIS TOUCH by TRACY ANNE WARREN

Synopsis:
Everyone in London agrees the Byrons are just as "mad, bad, and dangerous to know" as their poetic non-relation. But Lord Jack Byron is facing a predicament that is scandalous . . . even for him!

Marry a young woman because he lost a bet? Unreformed rake Lord Jack Byron would do anything to get out of it. But the rich merchant who holds his debt insists Jack lead his on-the-shelf daughter to the altar . . . and make her believe it's a love match. With no options, Jack agrees, thinking he'll be shackled to a closed-in spinster.

At 25 years old, Grave Danvers is by all accounts considered a spinster. Taller than the average women and with flaming red hair and glasses, she's no beauty. However, there is something about her that Jack Byron finds irresistible and he vows to bed then wed her (in that order!). He is successful in his scheme: get her to fall in love and marry him. However, just days before their wedding, the worst possible thing happens - she learns the truth!

Grace was insecure because she didn't fit the profile of how a typical Victorian beauty should look and so to watch her enter her own comfort zone was really refreshing. Jack was resolved to marry her to pay of his immense debt , but it certainly didn't hurt that they had fiery chemistry...but could they actually love each other? I loved and hated how stubborn these characters were; just when you think, this is it...the throw you for a loop. This author really knows how to build up the suspense and give you the perfect, romantic ending!

WICKEDLY EVER AFTER by MICHELLE MARCOS

Synopsis:
After discovering her fiancé in the arms of a courtesan, Lady Athena McAlister comes to a frightful realization: Most men prefer the company of their mistresses to their wives. How can she, and other brides-to-be, become both wife and mistress to a man? In her quest for knowledge, she begs her wealthy grandfather for money to start a finishing school for marriageable young ladies. There she and her friends discreetly invite London’s most notorious rakes to educate them on the art of seducing a man.

Marshall Hawkesworth’s sister has become far too knowledgeable about the ways of sex, and he suspects that her new finishing school is to blame. However, before he has Athena's school shut down for good, he’s determined to give her a few private lessons she won’t soon forget…

Athena is sick and tired of watching men sleep with whomever they please while she sits on the sidelines waiting to fall in love. Just when she thinks she's finally got the man of her dreams, she finds him with another woman and is left heartbroken. She intends to give this harlot a piece of her mind when she realizes that this other woman offers something she cannot... With the help of her friend, she opens a "finishing school" of sorts where by day, the ladies learn to be proper wives, but by night, they learn how to be vixens!

Everything is going well and many of her spinster students are successfully married until one day she meets Mr. Marshall. In a case of mistaken identity, she offers him a job as a nude model and he's far too amused to resist. Over time, he realizes that Athena is not as tough as she comes across and he tries to teach her that not all men are so callous. In addition to the love story between Athena and Marshall, there is a plot developing that will threaten Athena's future. (I ran out of sentences, but I will say that I loved this story!)

I hope you guys enjoyed this segment :)
Do you think I should try this again with another genre?

Here is Isalys's teaser for this week:

8 Romances in 8 Sentences - Part 1

Lately, I've been devouring historical romances. Who'da thunk I'd be such a fan of bodice rippers, huh? And even though I've been reading like a madwoman, I've been slacking in the review department so I thought I'd try something new...

This is a new segment called '8 Romances in 8 Sentences' :)
What I decided to do is write quickie reviews on all the romances that I've read lately. The first 4 sentences are a recap of the novel in my own words and the last 4 sentences are my opinion.

Here goes...

SCANDALS OF AN INNOCENT (Brides of Fortune #2) by NICOLA CORNICK

Synopsis: Miss Alice Lister feels anything but respectable. Bad enough that she is a maid-turned-heiress. Now the insufferably attractive Lord Miles Vickery is certain he can gain her fortune by blackmailing her into marriage—even though it was his deceitful charm that broke her heart once before. But she's positive the terms of her inheritance will prove an impossible task. After all, what rake could be completely honest for three long months? For his part, Miles finds his newfound frankness invaluable in entangling Alice in positions deliciously unbecoming of a lady. Of course, he doesn't yet know that he's falling hopelessly in love with this formidable innocent…or that he will soon go to impossible lengths to prove himself hers forever…

Lord Miles Vickery is a relentless rake in pursuit of marrying the perfect, rich bride - and he has set his sights on Miss Alice Lister, the newest & richest available heiress. Alice almost let herself fall for Miles once until he dropped her for someone else...now he's back and trying to get into her good graces again. Little does he know that gaining her inheritance via marriage is not such an easy task. He must prove himself to be completely and utterly honest for a period of three months in order to wed her.

Miles was your typical Victorian rake with a seedy past chock full of affairs. Alice Lister was a truly innocent and sweet character who was shunned by society simply because she wasn't born with a silver spoon in her mouth. I liked this book better than its predecessor because I loved how the characters evolved throughout the story and I found the storyline got more interesting. There was a bit of a mysterious twist to the story that could have been better developed, but I still enjoyed the story!

CONFESSIONS OF A DUCHESS (Brides of Fortune #1) by NICOLA CORNICK

Synopsis:
When an ancient tax law is invoked requiring all unmarried ladies to either wed or surrender half their wealth, it's not long before the quiet village of Fortune's Folly is overrun by a swarm of fortune-hunting bachelors. Marry again? Never! Not after what Laura, the dowager duchess, was forced to endure. Even if the arrival of her onetime paramour, Dexter Anstruther, is oh-so-tempting, she knows the secret she's kept from him would destroy any chance at a future together. Young, handsome and scandalously enticing, Dexter suspects Laura has a hidden motive for resisting his charms…and he intends to expose her, by any means necessary.

Note: This is the predecessor to "Scandals of an Innocent". There is a third book to this series that I haven't yet read...but is patiently waiting on my bookshelf like a good little book :)
Laura (cousin of Miles Vickery) has a secret; actually she has two and boy are they "doozies". Her secrets come very close to being revealed when the new law takes effect and Dexter Anstruther, her one-night stand from several years ago, comes storming back into her life. The pain of Laura's abrupt departure from Dexter's life still stings...yet he is still inexplicably drawn to her. He knows she's hiding something, but what he doesn't know is how her secrets will rattle him to the core and tie him to her forever!

I had a bit of a hard time getting into this book, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Laura is incredibly clever and a Robin Hood of sorts so I found that to be rather unique. Dexter seemed a little tortured & torn between love and hate for Laura so that really fueled a lot of the tension between them. Overall the book wasn't my favorite, but I wouldn't say it was bad either.

FIRST COMES MARRIAGE (Huxtable Quintet #1) by MARY BALOGH

Synopsis: When Elliot Wallace, Viscount Lyngate, arrives in Throckbridge, the small village is buzzing with excitement over the upcoming Valentine's Day dance. The ladies of the town are busy gussying up for the ball and gossiping about the viscount's mysterious arrival, but Elliot has more urgent matters to attend to. His arrival marks a mission to retrieve the rightful Earl of Merton, while his promise he has made to find a wife by Christmas weighs heavily on his mind. When Elliot meets the new young earl, Stephen Huxtable, and his three sisters, the disagreeable Margaret, the cheery Katherine, and the plain, widowed Vanessa, he becomes absorbed in the family's life. Could it be possible that with the Huxtables he's found both an Earl and wife? If Elliot thinks he's hit two birds with one stone, to which sister will he cast his throw... and will she catch the bait before she discovers his ulterior motives?

Elliott is introduced as a rather stand-offish and condescending character; it takes a while to really warm up to him. Vanessa was the "plain one" of the family, but has a very optimistic and sunny personality which at first conflicted with Elliott's character. However, it was Vanessa's honesty and sweetness that would eventually soften Elliott into someone you could love. What started off as a marriage of convenience would grow into an undeniable love. I think this was a great start to a new series.

Balogh did a great job in developing the personalities of not only the main characters, but of the secondary characters that would follow with their own books. There were some really sweet and even "LOL" moments that made me smile. The only thing that I could say I didn't care for was how often Vanessa was referred to as "plain or boring or not beautiful, etc." even by herself; however, this in effect was part of her charm.

MEMOIRES OF A SCANDALOUS RED DRESS by ELIZABETH BOYLE

Synopsis: At the end of the last book, "Confessions Of a Little Black Gown", Pippin made a heart-wrenching decision: In order to save Captain Dashwell's life, she agreed to marry Viscount Gossett. Twenty years later, a young American sailor passes her and stops her entire world. The man is the spitting image of Dash, and is in fact, Dash's son, Nate. Pippin, now a widow, decides to right the mistake she made all those years ago - she wants to see Dash and discover if the love she's carried in heart for all these years is nothing more than a fiction or if it is possible to find it a second time around. In disguise, she books passage on Dash's ship, and after three days at sea, reveals herself. When Dash sees Pippin on the deck of his ship wearing a red gown, he swears she's still as breathtakingly beautiful as she was the first time he saw her, but at the same time, he's furious over the years they've lost. But he can't simply return her to England, for she left a note that claims Dash has kidnapped her for a huge ransom. Can he make it across the Atlantic before the British Navy catches up with him, or worse yet, before Pippin claims his heart again?

Note: A while back, I reviewed "Confessions of a Little Black Gown" which was this book's predecessor. I loved it so much, that I had to read "Memoires of a Scandalous Red Dress". I still need a 3rd book, "This Rake Of Mine".

This is the story of Tally's cousin Pippin and her dashing American Pirate "Dash". This book was written a little differently from 'COLBG' in that it doesn't take place when Pippin & Dash first meet (although you get flashbacks of their passionate past) but rather many years later into their middle-ages. Dash has become a drunken recluse aboard his own ship and is a mere ghost of the fearless pirate he used to be. Pippin sneaks onto his ship with the hope that she can save him from himself and finally put her heart to rest.

Their reunion is stormy at first because not only is Captain Dashwell a drunken lush, but he's bitter because of the way Pippin left him so many years ago. Pippin had grown to love her husband and they had a happy marriage, but she never forgot her first true love. Over their time together on the ship, Dash's wounds begin to heal, he starts to regain control of his life and Pippin's love for him begins to flourish again. Pippin wants a new chance at love with Dash, but her children aren't about to let her become a society renegade!

(PS: Again I ran out of words but there's a juicy little twist towards the end :)

This concludes the first part of my '8 Romances in 8 Sentences'.
I will post my next 4 reviews tomorrow :)
