Blogger Hop & Follow 9.3.10

Thank the good Lord that it is finally Friday!
This has been the longest, most stressful week *eek*

It's time for The Blogger Hop and Follow Friday again. The Blogger Hop is hosted by Crazy-for-Books and Follow Friday is hosted by Parajunkee's View. They created these memes to give bloggers and readers a chance to network, support each other and find new blogs to read & enjoy.

TODAY'S QUESTION:
Do you judge a book by its cover?

Hello, my name is Isalys and I'm a book cover whore! LOL
I think we all judge a book by it's cover - even if we shouldn't, but should and won't aren't the same thing. We rely on a book's cover to attract our attention. With thousands of books lining the shelves, a book's cover should say, "Hey, just look at me, now pick me up!" Otherwise, you'll just walk on by and may miss out on reading a great book.

This is what leads me to believe that the cover art of a book is nearly as important as the content itself. Truthfully, a well-established author who has a strong fan base could probably put a turd on the cover and someone will read their books. However, if you're a new author, you really need to rely on your book's cover art as part of your marketing strategy.

I have two examples:
First, The Stephanie Plum Series by Janet Evanovich. We've heard about how funny these books are, but the truth is that I haven't read them because the cover art is, in my opinion, awful. It seems more of a deterrent than a lure. They weren't something that I was excited about adding to my shelf. However, I will say that Janet makes them memorable with the lime green and highlighter color action she's got going on, lol! Although I will say they've gotten better :)~

Second, Fallen by Lauren Kate. Now that is a gorgeous cover! I was blown away by how simply beautiful it was. I actually bought it at full price {hard cover} even though I already had an ARC. This book NEEDED to be on my shelf. And the paper it's printed on is deliciously soft...it's like suede *ahhhh*

And the cover to its sequel is just as amazing!

  1. I might be attracted to a book, but I don't judge those books, that I am not attracted to. It's chemistry. I do beleive it is what is on the inside that matters.

    Have a great weekend ladies.

  2. Lori-
You're absolutely right! I won't judge the book/story by its cover. The cover will, however, determine how initially attracted to it I am.

I didn't particularly care for the cover art of The Hunger Games (at first) and those books are incredible...so we definitely cannot judge the content by the cover, lol. The covers for the series have grown on me; I think they "fit" the story.

Have a great weekend yourself :)

  6. I am attracted to the covers as well but most the time I have to at least read the synopsis. I have been in a rush and just grabbed something that looked good from the cover but I wasn't disappointed by it. Thankfully

  7. I agree, cover art is really important. Something that really annoys me about cover art sometimes is when they get the character wrong. Shouldn't that be the most important part? Any who, I hope you gals have a nice holiday weekend!

  9. Seriously..ignore the bad cover art. Stephanie Plum is truly one of the best comedic characters out there. Evanovich is probably the only writer I've stuck with....I'm just starting the latest book but I've read all of them..Between the Plum and all...as well as the Metro Girl series.

Yes, I love great covers, but the plot is what makes a book.

  10. It does seem the majority of us book readers judge books by its cover, including myself. :-)

  11. The cover generally is what makes me pick up a book, but the blurb on the back is what entices me to buy it. But, I love beautiful covers. I will occasionally make a post on my blog with just cover love.
