Movie News: Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark

So here I am bloghopping and visiting some of my favorite peeps when I see quite possibly the craziest, coolest, and creepiest news EVAR!

Many of us are familiar with Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark by Alvin Schwartz. 

While I'm normally a big chicken and not a fan of scary movies, I can't help but SQUEAL at this news.  I adored these books as a kid in middle school!  I'm sure my parents just shook their heads at me and wondered what was wrong with their child but I didn't care.  The stories were creepy and the illustrations were horrifying and I loved them!

Well... *drum roll please*

According to Deadline, CBS Films has won a bidding war to adapt these, the most terrifying of children’s horror anthologies. The pair behind the adaptation are Saw writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan so know that shit is about to get real!

CBS Films has sprung for a pitch from Saw writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan to adapt Alvin Scwartz’s classic spooky tale collection Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. I’m told it was a competitive bidding for the project, which will see Melton and Dunstan adapt some of the Scary short stories into a screenplay about a group of outcast kids who stand up to their fears to save their town when nightmares come to life. Sean Daniel and Jason Brown of Sean Daniel Company and Elizabeth Grave of 1212 Entertainment will produce, with Roberto Grande and Joshua Long exec producing. 1212 initially optioned rights before teaming up with Melton and Dunstan, who are repped by WME and Trevor Engelson at Underground. VP Mark Ross and Creative Executive Alex Ginno are overseeing the project for CBS Films.
Schwartz collected the Scary Stories tales from folklore and urban legend. The three-book children’s series, which has sold more than 7 million copies worldwide, began with 1981′s Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark and continued with More Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark (1984) and Scary Stories 3: More Tales To Chill Your Bones (1991)

Isn’t it fun to dream? That’s what authors do 24/7. . .and if we’re lucky, it comes out as a book. But what if we took our dreams a step further and envisioned our characters up on the big screen? Really, if that happened to me, I think I’d faint!

Movie News: Daughter of Smoke & Bones

In more movie news, in what has become Hollywood's most recent habit, Laini Taylor's "Daughter of Smoke & Bone" is the latest YA novel to be picked up for filming! 

Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

Here's the information that has been released so far:

• Stuart Beattie will adapt the screenplay to the celebrated young adult fantasy novel, “Daughter of Smoke & Bone,” written by New York Times bestselling author and National Book Award Finalist Laini Taylor. The highly sought after property was acquired by Universal Pictures in December 2011.
• Beattie previously wrote the screenplay for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra for Paramount and Collateral for DreamWorks. Beattie wrote and directed the Australian hit feature Tomorrow When The War Began and is currently awaiting release on I, Frankenstein, which he also wrote and directed.
• “I’m thrilled to have Stuart Beattie adapting ‘Daughter of Smoke & Bone’; it’s been fantastic to delve into the world of the book with a screenwriter of such insight and experience,” said Taylor. “Between Stuart, Joe Roth, and Universal Pictures, we’ve got a team with massive epic flair, and I can’t wait to see what unfolds as we move toward bringing Karou, Akiva, Brimstone, and the world of ‘Daughter of Smoke & Bone’ to the screen.”
• Joe Roth will produce alongside executive producer Palek Patel. Roth produced the epic action-adventure, Snow White and the Huntsman for Universal which was one of Universal’s highest grossing films of 2012. Roth’s Oz: The Great and Powerful starring James Franco and Mila Kunis was the number one film in North America last weekend, and Maleficent starring Angelina Jolie will be released in the summer of 2014. 
• “Daughter of Smoke & Bone” has 33 foreign language licenses and is sold throughout the British Commonwealth. The book has received honors including an Amazon.com Top Ten Books of 2011, Amazon’s #1 Teen Book of 2011, a Publishers Weekly Best Books 2011, a Huffington Post Top 10 YA Book of 2011, and a New York Times Notable Children’s Books of 2011.
• “Days of Blood & Starlight,” the sequel to “Daughter of Smoke & Bone” is a New York Times and USA Today bestseller and was named a Best Book of 2012 by Amazon.com and Publishers Weekly, received an “A” from Entertainment Weekly and was named the “next big thing” by Wired Magazine.

Movie News: The Great Gatsby

I don't know where the heck I've been hiding but I just learned that The Great Gatsby is hitting theaters.  I know, right?  And it's starring hunky and uber-talented Leo DiCaprio!  He's so going to rock this role!

It's being directed by Baz Luhrmann who we know from Romeo + Juliet (1996) and Moulin Rouge (2001) among others.

Movie Review: "The Woman In Black"

Last weekend, my husband and I decided to go watch a movie which is a rarity since movies are so crazy expensive these days.  I'm über-picky when it comes to movies and there wasn't much that caught my attention except for "The Woman In Black".

This is a horror/thriller so I should preface this by saying that I grew a pair to see it because I am NOT a horror fan.  I *hate* blood and guts and gore.  I'm not necessarily all that squeamish, I just fail to see the appeal in watching people being dismembered *yuck*.  I do, however, have a deeply rooted love for ghost stories.  A ghost story set in Edwardian England?  I'm there!

In the film we meet Arthur Kipps played by Daniel Radcliffe who's a single father left widowed when his wife died in childbirth.  He's a young lawyer who's struggling to care for his son, pay for the nanny and make ends meet.  In order to save his job and earn an income, he accepts a case to settle the legal affairs of the recently deceased Alice Drablow who lived in the English countryside on a property known as "Eel Marsh" because of the surrounding marshlands.  He quickly realizes that he's not welcome in the town. He ignores the glares he gets and sets about to do his job - alone.

While working inside the old, abandoned mansion he learns that the house is not unoccupied.  He begins to hear loud noises and screams, sees the phantoms of the village's deceased children and encounters the fearful "woman in black".  Local legend has it that whenever someone sees the "woman in black", one of the local children dies in a tragic accident.  While going through old documents, Arthur learns the identity of the "woman in black" and why she goes after the children.  Without giving any  of the story away, let’s just say that even though he tried to put things to rights, he has reason to be concerned that his young son who he left in London with the nanny is coming to visit him at the end of the week.

As a young actor, it's a bit bizarre seeing Daniel play a widowed father.  However, we have to consider that people married considerably younger then than they do now.  A friend asked me if it was weird seeing Daniel play a character other than Harry Potter and my answer was, "not at all."  I think he did a stellar job and it was refreshing to see him play a role so different from his previous roles. He really got to flex his acting muscle and show us a bit more of what he's capable of.  During the entire film I kept thinking, "this guy is friggin' fearless...I'd be shitting myself all alone in that house." <- Actual thoughts.

The real beauty of this film lies in not only Daniel Radcliff's ability to really carry this film, but in the gothic, haunted beauty of the Edwardian setting & period costumes.  While the fear factor of the film primarily involved creepy shadows, loud noises, and trick camera effects, the director did a great job in setting the scenes up for maximum effect.  The creepy shadows had me on edge, the loud noises made me jump and those pesky camera tricks made me shriek a time or two! 

The film provided a twisted, fascinating, heartbreaking backstory while also giving us the thrills of a good, old-fashioned spookfest with Arthur Kipps' encounters with the "woman in black".

So, what's left?  How about some demon hunters?  Okay.

Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments novels were picked up by Screen Gems back in 2009, but here comes the interesting part: casting possibilities.

The first installment, City of Bones, quickly became a bestseller when it was released in 2007. The novel follows Clary Fray, a seemingly ordinary girl who stumbles into the hidden world of Shadowhunters and their prey: demons, vampires, werewolves and anything else with big teeth that might go bump in the night. There she meets and falls for Jace Wayland, the sarcastic, skilled Shadowhunter. As you are already guessing, their relationship turns out to be complicated by more than supernatural beasties; even Clary's mother seems to be harboring a deep secret.

Already on board is director Scott Charles Stewart (Priest) and 21-year-old daughter of Phil, Lily Collins (Priest, The Blind Side and next to be appearing opposite Taylor Lautner in Abduction) who has been cast as Clary, the fifteen-year-old red-headed trouble maker and artist. Now Vulture is reporting that the adaptation may have found its leading man: Screen Gems chief Clint Culpepper feels so strongly about casting Alex Pettyfer as Jace that he won't make the film without him.  **For the rest of the original article by Angela Burton, go to Indie Movies Online.

It's no secret that I'm a Halloween lover. I love ALL things Halloween. There's nothing better than laying down on a spooky fall night and watching a good Halloween movie. When the girls at Book ♥ Soulmates asked me to choose a Halloween related movie to do a guest post on, I was stumped. So I'll list a few of my favorites first.

Here's a few of my favorites:

Evil Dead 2, Halloween, Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissor Hands, The Witches of Eastwick , Death Becomes Her, Trick 'r Treat, The Bride of Frankenstein , 30 Days of Night, Texas Chainsaw Massacar, Interview with a Vampire, Screem, Hocus Pocus, Creepshow, The Shining, 28 Weeks later (any Zombie movie really) and much, much more.

I'd be here all day if I had to name them all. Although I love all of those equally, I choose to do my post on Beetlejuice for many reasons. My number one reason for doing Beetlejuice is because it's one of my favorites since I was very young. I watch it a few times a year, and always around Halloween. Beetlejuice is directed by Tim Burton, and stars Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice himself.

Betelgeuse is what how his name is really called, so noone will say it three times and unleash him. But of course it happens, and the magic starts!

The secondary characters in this movie were also what made the movie such a hit.  Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Catherine O'Hara, Jeffrey Jones and most importanly Winona Ryder. She was the backbone for this movie. From her rebellious, dark clothing to her curiosity and attitude, Beetlejuice wouldn't be as good a movie without her as Lydia. Winona really fits the part well. She always seems to be cast in Tim Burton's movies, along side of Johnny Depp, but although I'm in love with Johnny, I'm glad that Michael Keaton was cast for Beetlejuice. He really was a hoot!

Isalys: I am soooo with Tasha on this one!! Beetlejuice is one of my all-time fave movies so I've lost count of how many times I've seen it. Every time I come across it on TV, I have to stop and watch it and my husband always rolls his eyes and says, "how many times are you going to watch this?" and I always reply, "as many times as I want bitch!" {yes, I actually call him a bitch, lol}

 Oh and please tell me you all remember the cartoon!  I was obsessed with it as a kid!

YA Zombies to Hit the Big Screen; Kristen Stewart Likely to Star
Carrie Ryan's young adult zombie novel The Forest of Hands and Teeth has just been sold to Seven Star Pictures, the studio behind Kristen Stewart's upcoming movie K-11.
The novel, which was published in March by Delacorte Books for Young Readers, has been an instant hit with critics and book bloggers. It tells the story of Mary, a girl living in a small village bordered by a fence to keep out the Unconsecrated -- savage zombies intent on destroying the town and everyone in it. Add a little bit of romance and a gutsy female heroin, and you've got a teen thriller to rival Twilight.
Rumor has it that an A-list actress is tipped to star in the movie (could it be Kristen Stewart?), and a first draft of the screenplay is being written as soon as possible. With the popularity of vampires, werewolves, and all things supernatural currently dominating the literary world, it seems book adaptations are the way to go. What could be next? Our money's on Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments trilogy. Somewhere, somebody will be closing a movie deal on that one soon.

Vampire Academy Bites Big Screen!

We are THRILLED to announce that the Vampire Academy Series (well, the first book at least) will be turned into a movie!!
**Woot Woot** Who else is excited?!

"Transformers" producer Don Murphy is looking for the undead, teaming with Michael Preger ("Village of the Damned") on a feature version of Richelle Mead's six-part saga "Vampire Academy."

"Academy," set at St. Vladimir's Academy in the Montana forests, centers on Rose Hathaway, a 17-year-old female "dhampir" -- a half human/half vampire and a guardian of the Moroi race of peaceful mortal vampires. She must deal with the intricacies of the Moroi social order and the Strigoi, a race of bloodthirsty immortal vampires and predators of the Moroi.

"Academy" debuted on the New York Times Bestsellers list in 2007 and has been published in 34 countries. The sixth and final installment of the series is scheduled for release in December.

Murphy, whose credits also include "Natural Born Killers" and "Apt Pupil," asserts that a "Vampire Academy" pic will have mass appeal.

This is so exciting...and nerve-wrecking! You guys know that this is my favorite YA series which means the bar is set pretty high for the movie. Nine out of ten times, movie adaptations of books can range anywhere from 'tragic' to merely 'alright'...with few of them doing their book-counterparts justice. That is what worries me with Vampire Academy. Fans of this series know the complexity of the storyline & plot as well as the intensity & social dynamics of the characters. It is these things that, I think, will make filming this movie a challenge.

PS: Don Murphy, pleeeeeease make me proud!! I will not stand for any B-List teen celebs or Kristen Stewart wanna-be's casted for Rose or Lissa or well, any of the other characters, lol.
