Paperback, 252 pages
High school senior Victoria “Tori” Reeve has it pretty good. She’s rich, she’s smart, and she’s popular. What more could a girl ask for? Sure, she’s a little lonely, what with being single and her best friend going off to college and all, but she’s got her work at the Spaulding Crisis Center to keep her busy. When she gets a new boss in the very easy on the eyes form of Isaac Larsen, suddenly her volunteer work feels a lot less like work. Even if he does seem to cause Tori to break out into spontaneous fits of foot in mouth disease. Somehow in spite of her blunderitis, Isaac still seems to be interested in her in a more-than-employer or even more-than-friends kind of way.

So really she should have known that things would go sideways.

Trouble comes to Spaulding, and that trouble seems to be centered on Tori and the Crisis Center. Is she really the focus? Or does this all have to do with the new mysterious man in her life? In her efforts to find out, Tori stumbles across some secrets. Skeletons that might have been better off left in the closet. As it turns out, Spaulding is a hot spot for bad blood…
Chapter One
"Oh and that hair color! Right out of a bottle. You know it's as fake as those perky tits her daddy bought her...” It was the last Friday night before the start of my senior year. By all rights, I should’ve been at some sketchy party in the middle of the woods getting drunk off PBR while convincing myself that letting some totally hot guy feel me up was an awesome idea. Instead, I was the same place I spent almost every other night between the hours of seven and eleven, manning the phones at the local crisis center. That was how I ended up listening to someone who sounded suspiciously like Taylor Johansson - whose nasal voice was akin to a swarm of ticked off bees - rant about how someone who sounded suspiciously like me was purposefully trying to ruin her life. Clearly this was a crisis of epic proportions.

My eye roll was wasted on the empty office.

The truly maddening part was that after knowing her for my entire life, you would have thought I'd be used to brushing aside her idiocy, but ho-no. Instead, I was sitting here on the very last Friday of Freedom wondering why. Why would someone call a crisis hotline to complain about the size of anyone's breasts, let alone mine? Why was she so preoccupied with the size of my breasts? Why anyone would dye their hair brown? Had the expression changed to "brunettes have more fun" when I wasn't paying attention? When the rant reached the fifteen minute marker and I was totally not wondering if Taylor would even notice if I set the phone down to get a cup of coffee, she heaved an exaggerated sigh.

Only, you know, it sounded more like a whir.

Because her voice was so nasal.

It wasn't mean since it was true.

"So what are you going to do about this?"

"Do about what?" I asked dumbly, wondering what I could have possibly missed.

Another loud sigh. "What are you going to do about Victoria?" HA! I had been right, she was talking about me. Though why she spat out my name in a tone normally reserved for offensive curses, I was at a loss for.

But then, that was kind of par for the course in this train wreck of a conversation.

"I'm afraid that I can't do anything about her, ma'am. We're just here to help you talk through your problems."

"Well, what the hell good does that do me?", she snapped. "Can't you like, take care of her or something?" Like the crisis hotline was actually a volunteer organization staffed by mobsters.

"You mean like make her sleep with the fishes?" I know, I know, I shouldn't have been encouraging her, but honestly, this entire call had become too ridiculous for words. She was using a hotline for kids who were had actual issues to plot my demise. I did stop myself short of laughing. I do have some class.

"No, no. Don't be stupid. If we killed her, everyone would just feel sorry for the dumb cow. No, we should like, mess with her hair dye, so her hair turns all green. Or better yet, just cut all her hair off while she's sleeping."

"I'm sorry ma'am," I said, massaging the bridge of my nose and wondering if she could stop acting five. I’d even say pretty please. “All I can do is help you talk through your issues. If you'd like to discuss what the real issue is with this woman," I began, but her snarl cut me short.

“I’VE BEEN TELLING YOU THIS ENTIRE TIME. THE EVIL RICH BITCH IS PURPOSEFULLY OUT TO GET ME. SHE’S PLOTTING TO STEAL MY BOYFRIEND! JUST TODAY HE SAID THAT I SHOULD BE MORE LIKE HER. HE’S LEAVING ME FOR HER”, and she broke into hysterical sobs. I tried to remember the identity of the guy I was supposedly plotting to steal, but since I had no interest in any of the chuckleheads from school, I doubt it actually mattered. It mattered even less a moment later when she screeched “FORGET IT, YOU’RE NO HELP ANYWAY” and hung up.

I had never been so happy to end a call in my entire life. I celebrated by groaning and slamming my head down on my desk.

A deep voice asking "rough night?" from behind me had me smiling into my desk. I didn't raise my head, I didn't have to. Another side effect of so many sevens to elevens spent here, my boss's rumble was now part of my psyche. I could even picture what he looked like. His hair, which was always cut military short, was the same chocolate brown color of his eyes. In his mid thirties, he was 6 feet tall, and while he wasn't muscular he had the toned body of a man who ran every day. The only thing he was more devoted to then his workout schedule was his wife. Which might just have been why so many of the teenage girls who volunteered here didn't last longer than a week. He would be wearing a dress shirt, the sleeves rolled up and the top button unbuttoned paired with black slacks. His wire rimmed glasses would be sitting just slightly crooked. Rick was nothing if not predictable.

I merely grunted in reply without even bothering to lift my head.

"I, uh, I have something to tell you, Tori." He continued. It was strange to hear him pause since he was usually calm and confident. When I didn't reply, he continued. "As you know, Lisha is pregnant" Rick's wife was in her second trimester with their first child, and was just starting to show. She looked utterly adorable with a baby bump. “Now that I’m going to be a daddy, I’m going to be changing my shift here at the center. I can’t stay until midnight every night. It’s not fair to Lisha. So I’ve hired someone to cover the seven to eleven shift with you. Nice boy, going to college for pre-med, plans on becoming a shrink…” there was no way that Rick rambling meant anything good for me. I finally lifted my head from my desk and turned to look at him. His shirt cuffs were still buttoned, along with the top button of his shirt, and he was actually wearing a tie. No, this was no good at all.

"Who is it Rick?" I asked while eyeing him suspiciously.

"Well, it's Isaac Larsen." I couldn't help but groan. Well, this explained the caginess. The Larsens were members of an "alternative religion", aka cult, that had a "homestead" on the edges of town. There was an unspoken arrangement between the Larsens and the town of Spaulding. You ignore us, and we'll ignore you. It would appear that Isaac was about to break that uneasy truce.

"One of those cult freaks?" I asked and even to my own ears it sounded like whining.

"We actually prefer the term 'alternative religion' freak" came a disembodied voice from behind Rick. I stared at Rick in abject horror. To his credit, he attempted to look sheepish.

I shot from my chair as a man emerged from Rick's office. Simply put, the man was stunning. He had dirty blonde hair in that 'I just rolled out of bed' style that was currently popular, and it perfectly framed eyes that looked remarkably like multi-faceted emeralds. They stood out even more against his ivory skin that looked like it had never even heard of a blemish. He had angular cheekbones, a strong jaw and a perfectly straight nose. His face was almost too perfect. He was taller than Rick, probably 6'1 or 6'2, and while he'd never be mistaken for a body builder, he had a muscular physique. It was as if someone had dressed a Greek statue in a suit. And his shoulders. Dear lord, even in that suit you could tell he had perfectly delicious broad shoulders. I had the most distressing desire to dig my fingers into those shoulders.

"It's a pleasure to meet you Ms. Reeve". He extended his hand, and I hesitantly accepted. "Mr. Murphy speaks highly of you." Because it wasn’t enough that he was, dare I say it...dreamy, there was also the not-so-small matter of his voice. Oh, his voice. His voice was like warm honey. Like being caressed. Like being wrapped in velvet. It was also entirely to blame for what happened next.

“I am so sorry", I stammered. "You see I just got this call for a girl in my class and I’m pretty sure she was trying to get someone to, I dunno, do away with me. Pretty funny, calling a suicide hotline and asking the person on the other end of the line to commit suicide." I broke into a nervous giggle before continuing at a breakneck pace. "It appears that I'm trying to steal her boyfriend, something about dying my hair and getting my breasts enhanced. Because obviously if I dyed my hair I'd go for the box labeled 'mud'." I just couldn't seem to stop myself. "Not to mention that with these hips, that ass, and my waist line that I seem to have misplaced you can tell that my 36Cs are a little on the small side and definitely not something I'd have wasted my trust fund on." Thankfully, I ran out of breath.

Then I realized what I had just said. Except that, no, I did not just say that. I couldn't have. From the expression of shock on Rick's face, I guess I had. The devilish glint in Isaac's eyes and the smirk that graced his lips confirmed it. Oh dear god. Please just let the earth open up and swallow me whole.

"Oh I don't know," he said, barely containing his laughter, "I think you look quite... proportionate."

Anytime now with that swallowing me whole thing. I covered my face with my free hand, hoping to hide the fact that I had assuredly just turned a brilliant shade of crimson. Oh lord, had I actually been shaking his hand this whole time? Yes, yes I had. When I noticed, and tried to pull my hand away, he brought it to his lips and brushed my knuckles in a kiss. It was a charming, old fashioned gesture which just made me feel like an even bigger idiot. The corners of his lips had turned up into a slight grin. He lifted his head slightly so that he could peek at me from under his hair and our gazes locked. For a second, his eyes seemed to turn blood red and his smile suddenly seemed ominous. Rick chose that moment to not so subtly clear his throat, reminding us that we were not alone. Isaac dropped my hand, and I carefully inspected my shoes. When I looked back up, Isaac's eyes were back to resembling many faceted emeralds. I must've just imagined them being red. No one's eyes are red.

So there we were. Stuck in an awkward silence with me once again wishing that the earth would get on with the swallowing me whole thing. Promising anything for this moment to end. In answer to my prayers, the phone rang.

"Saved by the bell", Rick muttered while he ushered Isaac away, promising him a tour of the rest of the small office.

I took a deep breath before picking up the phone. "Spaulding Cares Crisis Hotline." To my credit I sounded pleasant enough given the slight feeling of guilt that I had knowing that my relief came at the expense of someone mid crisis.

"I'm having quite the crisis," came a familiar male voice, and I smiled in spite of myself. "You see, I'm in love with my best friend, but my penis is just SO LARGE that I just know that it will scare her off forever. I'm just too much man for her delicate sensibilities to handle." He let out an exaggerated sigh.

"Hello Drew," I said with feigned exasperation. Andrew Anderson was my oldest and closest friend, and just hearing his voice made me smile.

"Oh no, Tori, is that you?" He knew it was me, who else would be stupid enough to be here on a Friday night. He groaned, loudly. "TORI! NO, TORI! THIS IS NOT HOW I WANTED YOU TO FIND OUT!" Now he was just being a ham.

"What, that you're in love with me? I hate to tell you, but I already knew that. You told me when you were like six, remember?"

"No, no. I mean about my," dramatic pause, "sensitive condition." I could hear the grin in his voice, he was loving this.

"Oh, I'm sure it is quite sensitive," I snorted, "though this does give it a whole new meaning when I ask if you took the blue pill, Mr. Anderson." It's unbelievable, but Matrix jokes never got old and never failed to win me a chuckle. "So how are you adjusting to dorm life?" Drew had just moved into the dorms in preparation for his freshman year at Syracuse University where he'd be studying Architecture.

"Well, I found out why my father relented so easily on the whole apartment thing. It would appear that I am the only freshman on campus to be in a single dorm room. Just once I wanted to prove that I could make it on my own, but no, he just has to single me out by buying me preferential treatment." He didn't have to say he'd been dealing with this his entire life, we both had, and we both knew it. Our fathers were both old money and had been in the same fraternity at Harvard. It was a minor scandal that Drew hadn't gone to Harvard. After all, he was a legacy. To be honest, I think it was the main reason he wasn't going. As long as I was being honest I might as well admit that I was thrilled that instead of being about six hours away in Boston, he'd be less than an hour away in Syracuse. "Enough of my melodrama though, what the hell are you doing playing Mother Teresa on a Friday night?"

"What else would I be doing?" I thought back on my disastrous meeting with my new boss and shuddered. "I don't think I quite have the social skills required for anything more glamorous. I just made a royal ass out of myself."

"You? Get out of town."

"I know, it's shocking, but as hard as it is to believe, it's the truth. My new boss is Isaac Larsen, as in the Larsens, and after calling him 'one of those cult freaks' while he was in hearing range, I then tried to cover my social faux pas by telling him about my hair and the size of my breasts."

Drew actually choked. "You did what?"

"I'll tell you all about it tomorrow night. We are still on for tomorrow night, you're not calling to bail on me?"

"Not on your life. I was actually calling to see how insistent you were on going to a party tomorrow. I was thinking that since I ended up in a single room, I might as well make the best of it. How 'bout instead of playing a rousing game of 'avoid the vomit,' we order pizza and Netflix it up?"

"Well, I guess that would be alright." I sighed and acted put out. I hated parties and Drew knew it. He was doing me a solid, but I wasn't going to let that get in the way of pressing my advantage. "It's going to cost you though."

"Of course it is. Let me guess, you want to pick the movies and the pizza toppings? So we'll be going with pepperoni and pineapple pizza and 'Hello Dolly' then?"

"How did you know?"

"You've gotten predictable in your old age, Reeve. Anyways, I should let you go so you can save the world. I'll pick you up at six tomorrow."

"See you at six." I hung up feeling slightly less mortified and settled in for the last hour of my shift.

Sure, the life of a graduate student wasn't exactly glamorous, but it was Merit's. She was doing fine until a rogue vampire attacked her. But he only got a sip before he was scared away by another bloodsucker-and this one decided the best way to save her life was to make her the walking undead.

Turns out her savior was the master vampire of Cadogan House. Now she's traded sweating over her thesis for learning to fit in at a Hyde Park mansion full of vamps loyal to Ethan "Lord o' the Manor" Sullivan. Of course, as a tall, green-eyed, four-hundred- year-old vampire, he has centuries' worth of charm, but unfortunately he expects her gratitude- and servitude. But an inconvenient sunlight allergy and Ethan's attitude are the least of her concerns. Someone's still out to get her. Her initiation into Chicago's nightlife may be the first skirmish in a war-and there will be blood.
I actually heard about this book from my mom.  She mentioned it to me before anyone else had and then I realize that it already had a pretty well-established following so I added it to my TBR and Amazon wishlist.  Then one day, lo and behold, it appears in my mailbox :) Woohoo!  At the end of last year (a whole whopping week ago), I was looking for a fun read to finish off 2011 and finally picked it up.  It was exactly what I was in the mood for!

I liked Merit, but can't say that I loved her.  I, like many other fellow reviewers, found her frustration and anger slightly misdirected.  She was a 27-year-old grad student working on her English Lit degree when she was attacked on campus and left for dead.  She was "saved" by Ethan Sullivan, Big Daddy Vampire of Chicago's Cadogan House.  The only way to save her was to turn her, but in doing so she had to kiss her old life good-bye. We learn that vampires typically consult people before turning them, but given Merit's circumstances there was no time for that. She was pretty pissed about not being asked permission before turning her and decided that it was all Ethan's fault.

Her attack and introduction to the world as a baby vampire comes right after vampires announce their existence to the world.  While I understand her frustration at "dying" and not being able to complete her academic career, I think becoming a super-hot, ass-kicking vampire who doesn't have to hide and who works for a hottie like Ethan is not a bad alternative.  Death or vampirism?  One vampire coming right up!

I loved the palpable sexual tension between Merit and Ethan.  They have this serious "I-want-you-but-I-shouldn't" thing going.  With the exception of one kiss, not much happens between them but it's only a matter of time!  Ethan, while he has some major bonehead moments, is not without charms.  He's a 400+ year old vampire with MANY other vampires under his wing so he's got his plate pretty full.  Some of the things he said to Merit were hurtful and frustrating but considering his scope of responsibility, I can't entirely blame him.

The rest of the supporting cast was great, particularly Mallory and Catcher.  Mallory, Merit's best friend, is full of snarky awesomeness; I loved her no-nonsense attitude and her quickness to defend her BFF when necessary.  Catcher is a giant piece of hunky, grouchy man-meat and Jeff is an over-sexed shifter of unknown origins.  Morgan, a vampire from another house is lovable in his own way and I hope that he gives Ethan some competition for Merit's affections.

The most interesting aspect of the story was the vampire politics.  They are divided into houses, four of them being located in Chicago and each house is governed by a hierarchy. Vampires are assigned jobs by their master and they get an income for services performed in protection of the house & its members.  It's really quite interesting and logical!

One of the things that I did not like, and this might seem a bit silly, was the fact that vampire-Merit, like all other vamps, crave and eat regular [human] food.  In my mind, a vampire eating a hot dog is like a human eating dirt: not particularly tasty and has zero nutritional value.  With the exception of Merit's sudden allergy to sunlight, there was little else to actually distinguish her as vampire and not a human.

Overall, there is definitely room for growth with both the characters and the storyline but I enjoyed and look forward to reading the rest of the series.

True Blood Show Review 8.9.10

So after last night's True Blood episode, I have about a zillion thoughts going through my mind and I'm turning to you, my fellow bookworms and TB watchers to help me sort them.

1) Tara is becoming such a cynical bitch. I'm not saying she doesn't have her reasons to be. {Franklin was a hairsbreadth away from needing a jacket and some padded walls and then Bill turned her BFF into a Sookie Sundae}, but could we relax just a bit. Oh and please tell me why she decided to bash Franklin's head in with a mace when she had a perfectly good AX right next to her - Helloooo McFly?! Wouldn't that have been just a bit cleaner? Also, I was concerned about Franklin coming back since he didn't explode into a red corn-syrup slushie, but I guess he's gone for good.

2) As per HBO's usual protocol, they're introducing new characters and storylines way early (ie: Crystal and Holly)...although if memory serves right, they're not too far out. I wasn't quite ready for the Crystal/Hot Shots thing but I guess they need something to keep Jason busy. As for Holly, the actress playing her has a certain "off" factor that I think will work well with Holly's less-pleasant demeanor.

3) Uh, why did Hadley visit Sookie? They never spoke or visited in the books and I could understand it happening if it was important to HBO's version but that whole seen was rather pointless. My only guess would be that they're setting it up so that Hadley will get killed off in the next season which will lead to the visit in New Orleans and meeting Amelia and Quinn.

4) Debbie...oh Debbie! Trashy, psycho, She-Were bitch Debbie...
It was so tempting to let Sookie kill her in last night's episode, although that too would have been early and not how it happened in the books. I wonder if HBO-Debbie will try to play nice with Sookie like book-Debbie did.

5) Sookie, you hoe!! You just beat Debbie's ass, slashed her face with a scissor, Bill is covered in blood after munching on some weres and THIS turns you on?! Here's the real question: Is this "let's make up and get back together" sex or is this "my life just flashed before my eyes and I don't know what to do with all this adrenaline" sex? This whole thing is so off from the books that I can't even venture to guess where it will go from here.

6) Back to the aforementioned premature introduction, item # 2, looks like they're starting to set up the part where Jason ends up in Hot Shot and becomes a were because based on the scene where he confronts Crystal's dad - he's got it coming!! Maybe this whole thing will become the one of the main plots in season 4.

7) Fangs, Wands & Fairy Dust also did a TB review post and she made a really good point that I missed...and that is, what the heck is going on with Arlene's pregnancy? Rene was killed off in Season 1 which even by the show's schedule would have been month's ago so if Arlene's baby daddy is Rene and not Terry, wouldn't she be showing by now? I'm confused...

And last but not least...

8) Holy gayness Batman!! Between Lafayette & Jesus and Eric & Talbot, even my husband asked me, "Is this the gay episode?" If you like M/M action, then this was the episode for you. I understand that Eric had ulterior motives for seducing Talbot, but I would have preferred to keep Eric IN his skivvies until he hooked up with Sookie.

On a more positive note, I'm glad that they didn't kill of Jessica because for a moment there I thought they might. She's the one non-book-related addition to the show that I'm happy with!

Personally, the show is taking a direction that I can't say I'm too crazy about. I really wish they would take it easy with the gore because it just seems a bit over the top at this point. I would also love to ask the writers and the producers to re-read the books and this time, pay a little more attention to the story!

Until next weekend's episode, thanks for letting me rant!
Feel free to rant (or rave) back :)

Sneaky Peek: Spirit Bound (VA #5)

For you fellow fans of Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy Series, she has given us a little treat to tide us over while we wait for the fifth installment to be released on May 18, 2010.

But first, here's the synopsis for "Spirit Bound".

Dimitri gave Rose the ultimate choice. But she chose wrong…

After a long and heartbreaking journey to Dimitri’s birthplace in Siberia, Rose Hathaway has finally returned to St. Vladimir’s—and to her best friend, Lissa. It is nearly graduation, and the girls can’t wait for their real lives beyond the Academy’s iron gates to begin. But Rose’s heart still aches for Dimitri, and he's out there, somewhere. She failed to kill him when she had the chance. And now her worst fears are about to come true.

Dimitri has tasted her blood, and she knows in her heart that he is hunting her. And if Rose won't join him, he won't rest until he's silenced her...forever!

Now for the piece de resistance! A snippet from chapter numero uno :)

"There's a big difference between death threats and love letters–even if the person writing the death threats still claims to actually love you. Of course, considering I once tried to kill someone I loved, maybe I had no right to judge.

Today's letter had been perfectly timed, not that I should have expected any less. I'd read it four times so far, and even though I was running late, I couldn't help but read it a fifth time.

My dearest Rose,

One of the few downsides to being awakened is that we no longer require sleep; therefore we also no longer dream. It's a shame, because if I could dream, I know I'd dream about you. I'd dream about the way you smell and how your dark hair feels like silk between my fingers. I'd dream about the smoothness of your skin and the fierceness of your lips when we kiss.

Without dreams, I have to be content with my own imagination– which is almost as good. I can picture all of those things perfectly, as well as how it'll be when I take your life from this world.

It's something I regret having to do, but you've made my choice inevitable. Your refusal to join me in eternal life and love leaves no other course of action, and I can't allow someone as dangerous as you to live. Besides, even if I forced your awakening, you now have so many enemies among the Strigoi that one of them would kill you. If you must die, it'll be by my hand. No one else's.

Nonetheless, I wish you well today as you take your trials–not that you need any luck. If they're actually making you take them, it's a waste of everyone's time. You're the best in that group, and by this evening you'll wear your promise mark. Of course, that means you'll be all that much more of a challenge when we meet again–which I'll definitely enjoy.

And we will be meeting again. With graduation, you'll be turned out of the Academy, and once you're outside the wards, I'll find you. There is no place in this world you can hide from me. I'm watching.

Love,
Dimitri

Despite his "warm wishes" I didn't really find the letter inspiring as I tossed it onto my bed and blearily left the room. I tried not to let his words get to me, though it was kind of impossible to not be creeped out by something like that. There is no place in this world you can hide from me.

I didn't doubt it. I knew Dimitri had spies. Since my former instructor-turned-lover had been turned into an evil, undead vampire, he'd also become a sort of leader among them– something I'd helped speed along when I killed off his former boss. I suspected a lot of his spies were humans, watching for me to step outside my school's borders. No Strigoi could have stayed on a twenty-four-hour stakeout. Humans could, and I'd recently learned that plenty of humans were willing to serve the Strigoi in exchange for the promise of being turned someday. Those humans considered eternal life worth corrupting their souls and killing off others to survive. Those humans made me sick."

*eeeeek* I can't wait. I'm nervous just thinking about what's going to happen to Rose & Dimitri! Hold on...gotta catch my breath now!

Vampires Suck (Online Article)

Hi all!
Here's an online article our friend Brooke shared with us on facebook.

It made us wonder what you all think about the "New" kinds of vampires out there.
Does anyone care that the new vamps aren't the old-school blood sucking kind, but rather they are the caring, over-protective boyfriends?

Does it bother anyone that these new vamps are wayyyy too "emo" sometimes? They seem to have adopted a "woe is me" kind of attitude rather than the "I'm a creature of the night" mentality.

In addition, has anyone considered how many different species of vamps are out there now? Think about it...from fangs to fangless, from glittering in the sun to incapacitated by sunlight, from distinct markings & tattoos to blending in with humans and even walking along side them. It seems every writer has developed their own version of what a vampire is. Most authors today don't necessarily seem compelled to follow Bram Stoker's recipe of the ever-seductive predator of the night.

Vampires have always fascinated and captured the imagination of people. They were elusive and mysterious and now it's almost as if they walk amongst us. Many folks out there have dedicated more than just reading or movie time, but even lifestyles to them. How do you feel that these "new kinds" of vamps are affecting their image?

Overall, what do you all think about all the types of vamps in general - from Bram Stoker's "Dracula" and Anne Rice to the Sookie Stackhouse's "Bill and Eric" and Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight".

Which type of vamp do YOU prefer?

Vamps Suck
Actually, they don't. And that's the problem
By Grady Hendrix

Last week at Comic-Con, the big story wasn't comic books—it was vampires. Some 2,000 young women set up a tent city outside the San Diego Convention Center on Tuesday, sleeping rough so that they could attend the Thursday panel on New Moon, the upcoming sequel to vampire blockbuster Twilight.

It's just another sign of the massive popularity of vampires. Yet, like many people who acquire mega-celebrity, the vampire has developed an eating disorder. Read the books. Watch the movies. You'll see vampires who manage nightclubs, build computer databases, work as private investigators, go to prep school, lobby Congress, chat with humans, live near humans, have sex with humans, and pine over humans, but the one thing you won't see them do is suck the blood of humans.

No, bloodsucking is so yesterday. It's so 1994. It's so Anne Rice. Today's vampire is a good listener. He cares about our love lives and our problems, which is strange because we're supposed to be his food. Humans just assume that we are the center of the universe and so, faced with a literary creation that should, by all rights, just conk us over the head and suck us down like Slurpees, we've decided that we're too fascinating to be eaten. And so the modern vampire stalks, seduces, sleeps with, and cries over us. They don't eat us.

The original Dracula in Dracula loved to drink blood. He has "white sharp teeth, behind the full lips of the blood-dripping mouth." He forces Mina Harker to his bosom, where "[h]er white nightdress was smeared with blood, and a thin stream trickled down [his] bare chest," and he compels her to drink his blood, like a "child forcing a kitten's nose into a saucer of milk. ..." This bodily fluid fetishism was par for the course for the next 79 years, until Anne Rice's Interview With the Vampire, when Ms. Rice started to tweak up the Gothness. In her books, vampires were better known for being immortal than for sucking blood, which makes their fascination with humans even more mysterious: After living among us for hundreds of years, haven't they heard all of our jokes by now?

At least Anne Rice's vampires were still primarily bloodsuckers. The first sign that something was awry came with the introduction of Angel in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. A prime example of the brooding, crying-on-the-inside, leather-jacketed emo boy of the '90s (see also: Dylan McKay, Beverly Hills, 90210; James Hurley, Twin Peaks), Angel was a vampire who had a soul. He fell in love with Buffy, teared up a lot, and believed in random acts of kindness. Angel, in short, sucked. Or, rather, he didn't suck, which was the problem. When he did suck, he took limited amounts of blood from consenting human women, or sucked blood against his will, or sucked rat blood.

Rat blood.

Think about it. Faced with the impact of his diet on humans, Angel accepts a yucky, cruelty-free substitute, then endlessly lectures other vampires about their moral failings because they don't do the same. He's not a vampire—he's a vegan.

But the ladies loved him, and he launched a sensitive-vampire industry. These days, you have Laurel K. Hamilton's Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series, Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse novels (from which we derive True Blood), Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy books, and Leslie Esdaile Banks' Vampire Huntress Legends series featuring Damali Richards, a spoken-word artist who fights vampires, a detail which guarantees that I'm rooting for the vampires. But most damaging of all are Stephenie Meyer's Twilight books.

At least Angel, Anita Blake's vampires, Sookie Stackhouse, and most of the rest of them have a lot of sex. But Edward Cullen, immortal star of the Twilight books, does not have sex. Edward tells Bella, his human paramour, that they need to wait until they're married before doing the deed. In the meantime, he's fascinated by her, beguiled by her, he can't stay away from her—but he can't touch her. Instead, he lies next to her in bed and moons over her as she sleeps. Leaving aside the fact that he's a 90-year-old man, this is what stalkers do, not boyfriends.

Just as America's young men are being given deeply erroneous ideas about sex by what they watch on the Web, so, too, are America's young women receiving troubling misinformation about the male of the species from Twilight. These women are going to be shocked when the sensitive, emotionally available, poetry-writing boys of their dreams expect a bit more from a sleepover than dew-eyed gazes and chaste hugs. The young man, having been schooled in love online, will be expecting extreme bondage and a lesbian three-way.

The bigger problem here is that we're breeding sexually incompatible human beings, and vampires are to blame. I can see a time coming when the birth rate is going to precipitously decline. And what that means is that vampires are going to run out of food. But if Charlaine Harris, Laurel K. Hamilton, Stephenie Meyer, and all the others are right about the souls of their emo, Goth, velvet-wearing, crybaby vampire spawn, then maybe some kind of mass, Kurt Cobain-inspired, "You'll miss me when I'm gone," specieswide suicide is what vampires have been after all along.

Anna Paquin Promises More Nudity - True Blood Season 2

Kiwi actress Anna Paquin has promised there will be more nudity as the second season of True Blood kicks off in America.
Paquin plays waitress Sookie Stackhouse, who is in love with a vampire, in Alan Ball's hit HBO show. The second season began screening in America on Sunday night.
The first season has just finished screening on Prime in New Zealand, and the network promised the second season would air later this year.
Paquin, who won a best actress Golden Globe award earlier this year for her role on the show, said she had been working out at the gym more as there was increased nudity in the second season.
"I get more naked this season than I did last season," she told Eonline.com. "We have a really great crew and everyone's really respectful. It's not an issue for me."
"I work my ass off. I'm very careful about what I eat, and I work out a lot. My costume entails bathing suits, short-shorts and nude scenes.
"I don't want to be perpetuating the myth that women actually do look exactly like the way they look in magazines and on television through absolutely no effort!"
Paquin is dating her on-screen boyfriend Stephen Moyer, who plays vampire Bill Compton.

Review: Hunted (House of Night #5) by P.C. Cast

Hunted is the 5th and most recent installment of the House of Night series by P.C. Cast.

NOTE: This review contains some spoilers!

I've been a fan of this series for a while now. I picked it up on a whim one day at Barnes & Noble and was instantly hooked. In this book, Zoey's love life becomes increasingly complicated while the world around her seems to fall at Kalona's feet. To be perfectly honest, Zoey's indecision about the men in her life is starting to get a little tiresome. I want her character to be happy and in love (at least for a little while). Erik is, as far as I'm concerned, the most logical choice...and he's smokin' hot. However, his little possessive rant definitely cost him some points. She has history with Heath, but he's just not right or mature enough for her. As for Stark, there definitely seems to be some chemistry there, but I would like to get to know him a little better still.

In terms of the other characters, Aphrodite has become one of my favorites. She has evolved and grown the most which has been really great to read about...and I love that she knows how to crack the whip! Her imprint with Stevie Rae had me laughing out loud. It definitely threw us for a loop. It was also interesting to learn more about the red fledgings and see Stevie Rae becoming more & more herself again. Although Stevie Rae seems to be hiding something and I'm very curious to see what she has up her sleeve.

I don't want to delve too deeply into the situation with Kalona and Neferet because I don't want to ruin it for those who haven't read this far into the series. However, I will say that during Zoey's time with the red fledgings, she discovers that one of them is writing prophetic poetry. This leads to a pretty serious twist in the story and she finds herself back at the House of Night where they uncover more of Kalona and Neferet's plot to change the world.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. Some things were resolved and some were left open for the next installment which I'm really looking forward to. This book is fast-paced and I practically read it overnight. I will say this for P.C. Cast, she definitely knows how to keep you hooked because I'm anxious to find out how Zoey will handle all of this in "Tempted" =)

I give this book ★ ★ ★ ★

Review - Sookie: Dead and Gone by Charlaine Harris

Isalys's Review:
Charlaine Harris definitely kept us intrigued and occupied with this latest installment of the Sookie Stackhouse Series. There was enough action and mystery throughout the entire book to keep you engrossed…and of course, Sookie is smack in the middle of it all!

In this book, the Weres decide to follow the Vampires lead and publicly announce their existence to the world’s shock and dismay (and occasional excitement) and soon, one of their own turn up dead. However, the Weres aren’t the only ones with problems. The Fairies are back and with a vengeance. There is a serious battle brewing in Faery (their world) and Sookie becomes a target because of her relationship with Niall, the Fairy Prince. The only ones that have any relative peace are the Vampires…and even they aren’t clear of the danger. Because of the ever present danger that Sookie finds herself in, she ends up calling favors from both the Vamps and the Weres, but it comes at a heavy price when lives are lost.

I genuinely enjoyed this latest book more than the last (Sookie: From Dead to Worse). I am a big fan of Eric so I was glad to have him back in Sookie’s life, even though their relationship became increasingly complicated. I loved that you not only learned more about his own human past, but you learned more about the Fairies as well. My only criticism is that there may have been too much going on at times and it became a little difficult to follow. Overall, I really enjoyed this book (as I do the entire series) and am ready for book 10…based on the way this one ended, I’m sure it’s on the horizon!

I give this book ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Vanessa's Review:
Book 9 of the Sookie Stackhouse series is, in my opinion, one of the best in the series.
I absolutely LOVE how Eric and Sookie's "ship" (relationship/friendship) has changed in a suprising way! There's a hot and steamy scene involving Sookie and ... (I'll never tell!) I think it's GREAT that Bill is still there trying to save Sookie's life. Even though I'm personally a little upset at him for some of the actions he's taken in the previous books, I can't seem to stop sighing everytime he calls her sweetheart and vows to protect her even if it costs him his life! There's a line in the book where he says, "Sweetheart, I have always loved you and I will be proud to die in your service". **Sigh** Does the fact that I sigh for both Eric AND Bill make me a fangbanger? Hmmm...? Now the REAL question is, does BILL actually die?!

I'm a little surprised at Charlaine Harris for having Sookie reflect on her decisions and how they affect her Christianity. She hasn't really done that before. There's a part where Sookie says to herself, "That made me a bad Christian, I realized. Though I knew I wasn't a deep theological thinker, I sometimes wondered if crisis moments in my life hadn't come down to two choices: be a bad Christian or die? I'd chosen life everytime." I think it's fine for Sookie to have these thoughts, after all, she IS human and she IS a Christian, but I really hope Charlaine doensn't go all "Anne Rice" on us and start writing only Christian books!

Even though Charlaine tied up some loose ends from the previous books, she left a whole bunch of new ones! I cannot wait to read the tenth book! I sure hope we don't have to wait a whole year for the next one!!
