Review: Captivate by Carrie Jones

Title: Need {Part 2}
Author: Carrie Jones
Publish Date: January 2010 by Bloomsbury
Pages: 273, hardcover
Reason for reading: For fun =)
Challenge: iFae

Captivate picks up right where Need left off: Zara is settling into her new life with her grandmother, her relationship with Nick is going strong, and everything seems to be on the up & up...except Zara's real father & his pixies continue to be a thorn in her side. Not only is she dealing with dear old dad and his havoc-wreaking monsters, but she rescues a new pixie king that causes her to question everything she's hated and worked against. This new king is almost kind and protective, yet he wants to destroy her father and take over the territory. And if all that's still not enough, the deadly (and very angry!) pixies have gotten loose and are threatening the lives of those she loves. What's a half-pixie girl to do? It's Zara's conflicts and motivations that really drive this story.

Carrie does not continue using Zara's quirk/obsession of phobia's in this book (only bits here & there), but she makes up for it with her humor and powerful use of the character's emotions. Those emotions made this follow-up more of a rollercoaster than its predecessor. Some moments made you laugh, some made you sigh or gasp and others made you want to cry!

The characters that we know & love continue to evolve throughout this story without losing those quirks that made us fall in love with them in the first place. In addition, we get to meet some new and intriguing characters such as the new pixie king, Astley. You want to trust him, but not quite sure if you can - yet!

This book ends with a mega cliffhanger leaving us salivating for the next book. I don't want to give anything away, but there are some major plot points involving Zara, Astley and Nick that I'm sure will be covered in part three.

This is definitely worth reading if you enjoy delving into the paranormal. It pulls you in and makes you want to know what will happen next. I've really come to like Carrie Jones' style of writing...she's witty & funny, yet dramatic and realistic (not the pixie part, but her characters).

I give this book ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

  2. I liked Captivate a lot more than Need- I thought Need was pretty standard as far as YA paranormal books go, but Captivate was where the story really started to develop into something unique. Great review!
