Synopsis: In Mary's world there are simple truths. The Sisterhood always knows best. The Guardians will protect and serve. The Unconsecrated will never relent. And you must always mind the fence that surrounds the village; the fence that protects the village from the Forest of Hands and Teeth. But, slowly, Mary’s truths are failing her. She’s learning things she never wanted to know about the Sisterhood and its secrets, and the Guardians and their power, and about the Unconsecrated and their relentlessness. When the fence is breached and her world is thrown into chaos, she must choose between her village and her future—between the one she loves and the one who loves her. And she must face the truth about the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Could there be life outside a world surrounded in so much death?

Vanessa's Review:
What is up with Mary being so faruqing selfish?! **phew** Now that I've got that off my chest...

Mary lives in a village in the Forest of Hands and Teeth. The people in this village believe they are the last living survivors after "The Return". The story begins with Mary suffering a significant loss in her life and having to choose whether her mother dies or becomes one of the Unconsecrated (Zombies). Her decision eventually leads to her banishment from her own home and is therefor forced to live with the Sisterhood - the nuns of the village. Just before entering the church, Mary finds out that the love of her life, Travis, will be marrying her best friend, Cass. Mary feels lost and alone, especially when the main nun treats her like dirt and forces her to take a vow of silence. Mary's only drive in life is to believe in her mother's bedtime stories of far away places where there's water as far as the eye can see - a place called The Ocean. Mary is determined to leave her village, but that would mean entering the Forest of Hands and Teeth and being among the Unconsecrated. Will she have the nerve to leave? Will anyone believe her or follow her? Possibly... but I'll never tell! **Evil smirk**

This book takes you through a roller coaster of emotions! (My kind of book!) There are moments in this book that make you want to scream! I literally wanted to jump in the book and yell "Stop being so faruqing selfish!!!" .. and then .. there were other times that I wanted to jump in to comfort Mary or give her a helping hand. I want to write more... but I can't! I don't want to give too much away. I'll just end it with this: Mary loses a lot of people. There is a lot of sadness... but there is also a lot of determination and a will to live. Even if they ARE the last survivors.

  1. I just wanted her to shut up about the stupid ocean, but whatever gets her moving, I guess. It was a good book overall.

  2. I'm so glad you enjoyed this book as much as I did. I can't wait for you to finish TDTW so we can talk about that one too! And yes, Mary was faruqing driving me carazy with her whole ocean deal. Argh. Like if she didn't have bigger issues to deal with.
