TGIF: Buy or Borrow?

This week's question:
Buy or Borrow: Where do your books that you read come from? The bookstore? The library? Do you prefer to own a book, or have it on loan?

I LOVE owning my own books! I love having my shelves full of the books that I've enjoyed and I constantly admire them. I have, however, borrowed books and although it is an inexpensive way to read, there's just nothing like having a book be ALL yours! Plus, knowing a million people have touched the same pages and have made them dirty makes me a little queasy. What if they were eating cheetos? Eww!

I LOVE to own my books too!  I buy most of my books from Barnes & Noble.  I have two locations within a couple of miles from my house so it's really convenient. Quite a few of my books are also courtesy of R.A.K. and my awesome fellow bloggers & book buddies.  They either came from Amazon or found a new home on my Billy.   I have nothing against borrowing books from the library or from friends, but that's really rare for me.

  1. I now prefer owning my books because of my goal to have my own library one day inside my house :D an entire room with books! :D

  2. Cheetos? LOL

Blogging made me realize, I never reread. So I'm a mega borrower who gives away books (usually to my local library) when I'm done.

  3. I prefer owning my books. Although through net galley and book tours and what not, it is hard to do that (which means I have to go out and buy a copy even though I might not re-read it). Haha. I find it hard to use library books.

  4. I'm not very good with borrowing so unless it's an e-book with an expiration date, I usually prefer to buy my books from the bookstore or straight from my nook. I'm right there with you that I like to own books since it makes my bookshelves look so pretty, all filled up and nice.

  5. I am a huge sucker for used-book stores. Its cheaper but I can keep them! I'm working on my masters in literature and NEED to write all over the text! ha...supernerd.

  6. If I can get my hands on a book for a few bucks, I am all about buying! However, I've recently discovered that I can borrow library books minus all the sticky fingers! The more recently released books seem to not be as popular in my city and so I've been the virgin reader to many new ones! I too want a library of my own one day, but also find that I never reread books. It all depends on the book :)

  7. I use every method - library, purchase, borrow, ebook. It doesn't matter to me! I rarely re-read either; some books I prefer to buy to support the author or if I go to a signing, but a lot I'd rather just get the ebook or use the library. Owning books takes up a lot of space. Once I have a book it's hard to part with!

  8. The library rarely has books I want to read.
And I will confess: I'm horrible with reading books I borrowed! If I'm on a time schedule I suddenly do not feel like reading the book anymore.
So I buy most book I read and occasionally borrow a book from a friend

  9. Cheetos? Are they that offensive? Lol. I do like owning my books, but my wallet doesn't allow it.

  10. I borrow some of my books from the library but my local library is small and doesn't have all the books that I would love to read. There aren't any bookstores near me unless I want to travel for hours.

I love paperbackswap.com where book lovers can swap used books for free (minus the cost of postage). When I have the extra funds to buy books I usually buy from The Book Depository or Barnes and Noble. Even though book depository ships through the mail and it takes a couple weeks, they have great, hard to find editions.

  11. For many years I used the library a lot! but then it closed down for a year and subsequently opened but it is so difficult to get into parking wise and the books too heavy to carry for such a distance that I started haunting the freebies of the ebooks. I would often read a book from the library and then if I really loved it would invest in the series. So now I purchase or thanks to awesome giveaway opportunities win my reading material :)

  12. If the book is so good that I do back flips, then I have to own it. I love passing on the love too.

  13. I love the library! However, I have so many books that I bought I have to catch up on those first. I get my audio books out of the library though b/c to buy them is so expensive.

  14. Haha! Vanessa I am a huge germaphobe so I understand not wanting to touch the pages of a book that who knows how many people have touched. I also like to own my own books. I don't really use my library, and I know that I should, but I have a hard time with it.

  15. I just wrote a post about this very topic! I like to buy my favorites but usually borrow ebooks from my library. Hard copies of library books are pretty icky so I tend to avoid those.

  16. I love to own my own books too; especially faves or series that I know that I will be re-reading over and over again!
I have no prob borrowing from the libray, as long as they're fairly new, especially for the kids! I'm big on germs too, lol!

  17. I like owning books as well, and depending on the author I will buy them, but I also love going to the library and getting a big pile of books too!!!

  18. Library books freak me out. ONE) Because my Library really don't have anything that, that I don't have. TWO) I am such a GERM a fob that I will think of everything that could possibly be on the book, that you can not see! *Shudders*
    =)
    Happy Reading!

  19. I buy all my books from our local independent bookstore. If I love it and want to it so much that I'm happy to pack it up and unpack next time I move, then it finds a home on my bookshelf. If it's so/so, I will pass it onto friends who I think might like it better than I did. I will also give books away to our local library or school.
